Egotists and Plebs

Listening again recently to the amazingly beautiful rendering of 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' by Eva Cassidy, I thought, 'That's it, only an egotist or a musical pleb would dare to record another cover.' Cassidy has nailed it - in spades. No doubt someone has, however, tried to do better since.

Then I heard on a TV drama another eogotistical pleb trying to perform Misty Blue after Dorothy Moore. I thought, 'Whatever makes this fool suppose he can better Dorothy Moore on this one?'

And then again this evening I heard a pathetic rendition of Stevie Wonder's 'My Cherie Amore' by some female with a sqeaky voice. Comparitively hopeless!

Only a puffed up notion of their musical abilities coupled with a plebeian ignorance of what is beautiful would lead someone to try and better such performances.

Which brings me on to the King James Bible. In 1611, God gave English speaking peoples a masterpiece of literary prose and a translation of surpassing skill. Sure enough, up pop the egotists and plebs who think they can do better. They can stick their egotistical, plebeian attempts at a Bible, as we say in certain parts of England, 'up their jumper.'
